Message from the President Dear fellow members and residents,
It has certainly been a wet month. I cannot remember a time when I have
left indentations in my front lawn as I walk across it! Those walking in
our parks will know just how sodden they are and the damage done to
paths – as well as the neighbouring bush as people desert the path to
find dry land.
Your Civic Trust has written to Hornsby Shire Council about the state of
Fearnley Park, as it has become a quagmire. While it is an area of
creek and run off the amount of water entering the park seems more than
you would expect from these two sources only.
Transport for NSW responded to our concerns about flooding near the
entry to the railway underpass on the northern entry from Sutherland
Road. You may recollect that the most recent works removed culverts
under the paths and built a new concrete apron for bikes just where
water traditionally entered the nearby creek. You may have noted that
after the second amount of flooding, they have dug drains to remove some
of the overflow and a drain around the concrete bike apron.
Parramatta City Council has declined to improve the pedestrian access
along the western side of Beecroft Road for those residents walking from
the M2 to get to Epping Railway Station. In wet weather residents have
been seen taking their life into their hands by walking on the road. We
are working with Epping Civic Trust to avoid a tragedy. Your Civic
Trust worked with Pennant Hills Civic Trust and Westleigh Progress
Association to take advantage of a dry Saturday and hold a stall at the
Pennant Hills High School fete. Lots of people were there, with some
estimating numbers to be in the thousands. We built on strong links and
laid the groundwork for joint projects.
One joint project is to work on making the Epping to Pennant Hills bike
path as useful and least damaging as possible. While the rain has
impeded work, the building of the bike path through our suburbs is
progressing. No resolution of how the path should enter Epping or
Pennant Hills has as yet been resolved. Hornsby Shire Council is hoping
for Transport funding to bridge the M2. This sounds like a very long
term project.
Talking of the M2, we haven’t as yet heard back from our State Member
concerning benchmark noise measurement of the traffic on the part
neighbouring the Beecroft Reserve which lacks sound barriers. Our survey
in this e-news wants to hear from you as to the importance of managing
this noise.
Hornsby Shire Council has announced its capital works for the next year
and beyond. We are pleased to see work included on developing a master
plan for the Village Green and a traffic study for the Beecroft retail
area. What has left us nonplussed, however, is the kerbing and guttering
of Burns Road North. This seems to be not just a waste of money and
isn’t satisfying any resident demand whatsoever and is likely to damage
trees and streetscape. Surely this money could be better spent on, say,
Fearnley Park!!
Finally, the Civic Trust has been advocating for some time for
enforcement powers to be included to prevent blatant breaches of
development conditions, Land & Environment Court decisions and of
heritage conservation orders. The example of other local government
areas would seem to show that more can be done than is presently
happening with Hornsby Shire Council. Even if Council is half right
about their hands being tied, this must be an important issue in the
forthcoming State election.
In relation to developments outside of our suburbs your attention is
drawn to what is still being planned around Cherrybrook Metro Station
and the development on T G Millner Sportsground at Marsfield .
Did you know that T G Millner was a resident of The Boulevard and that,
following the move of the Eastwood Rugby Union team to Castle Hill, the
playing fields named in his honour are proposed to become the site of a
hectare of public parkland together with 132 two-storey terraces.

Beecroft Road Intersections. One
of many collisions at the intersection of Beecroft Road and Kirkham
Street. The Trust continues to lobby for a comprehensive study and
traffic management plan.
M2 road noise. The
increased traffic on the M2 and the rapidly deteriorating road surface
continues to have an adverse impact on residents living close to the M2.
The Trust is continually raising this issue with the State
Government. We are pushing for an updated set of noise
measurements to be recorded and acted upon.
Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust. The Trust has for many years fought and lobbied to protect our suburbs.

Trust has serious concerns over some aspects of the Cherrybrook Station
precinct rezoning plan. We are working our way through all the
